Every organisation has a culture.
Whether intentional or unintentional.
Whether clearly defined or not.
And while culture is often discussed in terms of values, vision and mission statements, culture is ultimately shaped by something much simpler.
What people repeatedly experience.
What behaviours are accepted.
What standards are reinforced.
And what leaders choose to tolerate.
Culture Isn't What We Say
Most organisations have values.
Words displayed on walls, websites and presentations.
But culture is not created by words alone.
It's created by behaviour.
It's reflected in how people communicate.
How conflict is handled.
How leaders respond under pressure.
How people treat one another.
And how consistently expectations are upheld.
What We Ignore Often Grows
Small behaviours can have a significant impact over time.
Poor communication.
Lack of accountability.
Disrespect.
Unhealthy workloads.
Constant pressure.
People working through breaks.
Meetings that achieve little.
When these things continue unchecked, they become normal.
And when they become normal, they become part of the culture.
The Standards We Walk Past
There is a saying that often appears in leadership circles:
"The standard you walk past is the standard you accept."
Whether intentional or not, people pay attention to what leaders notice.
And they pay attention to what leaders ignore.
Every action sends a message.
Every response reinforces a standard.
Every decision contributes to culture.
Creating A Healthy Workplace Culture
Strong workplace cultures are not created through perfection.
They are created through consistency.
Clear expectations.
Healthy conversations.
Mutual respect.
Psychological safety.
And a willingness to address issues before they become accepted norms.
The goal isn't to eliminate every challenge.
The goal is to create an environment where people can perform, contribute and thrive.
A Question Worth Asking
Take a moment to reflect.
What behaviours have become normal in your workplace?
What standards are being reinforced?
And what might be tolerated today that could become tomorrow's culture?
A Final Thought
Workplace culture is not built in a day.
It is built through the behaviours, habits and expectations that are repeated over time.
Because culture isn't just what we promote.
It's what we tolerate.
